EuWiKon 2.0 – German Pirates push forward positions on Europe and the economy
Last weekend, 9-10 March 2013, about 80 Pirates of the German Pirate Party met in Frankfurt, Hesse to do a follow-up on last year’s successful conference on European and Economic Policy (or “EuWiKon”, as the German acronym goes). Just like last time, the event was organised by Pirates from the party’s working groups (WG) Economics, Europe and Monetary System.

EU copyright law – Pirates enable citizen participation
The European Commission is currently planning the next revision of IPRED, the Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive. At the very least the directive is expected to carve the current copyright regime deeper into stone, thereby further preventing much needed reform.

German Pirates pull through on issues despite struggle with formalities
Last weekend, the Pirate Party of Germany held their second federal party convention of 2012 in the Ruhr city of Bochum, Northrhine Westphalia. Over 2000 registered Pirates from all over the country came to discuss and vote on motions for the party manifesto. The party’s working groups had improved upon the motion texts tirelessly for months – through late-night teleconferencing sessions via Mumble, the primary working mode of PPDE, as well as on several face-to-face meetings, like EuWiKon earlier this year. Compared to earlier Pirate conventions, the agenda was quickly agreed upon. After that, however, progress became increasingly slower.

New Draft Reveals OpenCleanIT Was Shortened
This is an update to yesterday’s article, which analysed the draft CleanIT document published and opened for comment by the OpenCleanIT platform. Another draft of the CleanIT document has been published (version 0.77 dated October 30, whereas the previously discussed document was version 0.762, dated October 24). It seems as if the version published on the OpenCleanIT platform was severely shortened.

Pirates open up CleanIT. But has it changed?
CleanIT is a public-private partnership project by several European governments, internet industry firms, and NGOs that has been subject to strong criticism. Opponents fear CleanIT endangers civil rights and internet freedom, while keeping their work hidden from public oversight. This secrecy has now been reduced.
