Show Notes: The Order of the Pirate Unicorn Podcast 002
The podcast was recorded on 29th April 2015 and follows the OOTPU chat held on Sunday the 26th.
TOPICS:
Working Groups
Two Working groups are in the process of being grounded
Marketing and Leak Researchers
As three Pirates are needed to be an official Pirate organisation both require more interested people
Marketing:
Short term goals: Election campaigns, signature collecting, protesting legislation
Long term goals: membership recruitment, awareness in the population of the party and Pirate related issues
Eventually it could oversee the training of press officers, press work groups. Advice like how to get access to radio and television and hold online conferences and workshops – in mumble and similar channels
Demographics
There is a feeling among the press, public and pirates that our demographic is young 18 – 25 and tech savvy. They are a good source of activists but, as a whole, they tend not to vote.
However, it would seem to be that one of the best demographic for voters and activists would be the over 54’s – it is the baby boomer who introduced computers to the world and many of them were first adopters of the internet. Many are aware of the issues and are worried about the future their grandchildren will inherit – I forgot to ask for a source but will try to get some for the next podcast. Anecdotally – I have a lot of Pirate friends who are the same vintage as I am.
Another important demographic is the family demographic.
Families with children tend, and yes there are lots of Pirates and activists with kids but – with work and family demanding time – there is less time for politics.
We should investigate family friendly meetings – not in bars and pubs but in peoples homes where kids are welcome and also picnics and meetings in parks and other open spaces in summer.

Event Hosting
A call was made for Pirates interested in staging, hosting collaborative events – panels – on copyright by authors along the lines of the #fixcopyright event held by MEP Julia Reda
Are You a Pirate? Quiz
The Swedish Pirate Party designed a quiz of the type one sees in Twitter and Face book. The quiz was Are You a Pirate? Naturally in Swedish.
Question ideas we came up with included:
Have you ever file shared? (shared culture?) (shared knowledge?)
Do you like working with others to create awesome stuff ?
Do you want to be a global citizen ?
Are you happy using social media?
Are you happy with the news?
Need to make more transparent the management of your government?
Does politics need to be more democratic?
Do you want to change the world?
What OS do you use?
Human rights
Digital rights
Surveillance
(at this point we realised the questions must be multiple choice. We will have to rethink the previous ones)
Heroes – Snowden against other hero pictures e.g MLK, Gandhi, Putin, Che
Philosophers – Plato, Kant, Marx, Adam Smith

PPSE Will Vote on Leaving PPI
Pirate Party of Sweden will be voting to see if they will follow PPAU, PPUK and PPIS and terminate their observer membership at a vote in their next General Assembly. The Brazilian Pirates will also be making the same decision. PPBE had suspended their membership but have now resumed full membership.
PPEU Awakes
After a long hiatus PPEU has sprung back into life and they tried to organise a council meeting at the soon to be staged PPCZ – PPDE conference to be held. However, the statutes require a longer period of notice than was available.

Two great blogs on the subject by Lexi Alexander and Cory Doctorow

About Andrew Reitemeyer
I joined the Pirate Party of Lower Saxony in Germany in April 2012, once I found out that non citizens were welcome to join and become active members of the Party.
I joined the Pirate Times soon after it was started as a proof reader and am now an editor and author. Since then I have returned to my native New Zealand and joined the Pirate Party of New Zealand.
Politically I come from the libertarian left and have, up to now, not regarded any political party as having a solution for the democratic deficit that envelops the world. With the advent of the Pirate Party, which truly embraces grass roots democracy, I have found a political home. The Pirate Times is a way I can contribute to furthering the Pirate Movement around the world.
