PPI Agrees to Support the Snowden Treaty
This post is also available in: Spanish
At the Pirate Parties International board meeting, board member Henrique Peer announced he had been approached by David Miranda, who asked the organisation to participate in the Snowden Treaty project.
Miranda is the partner of journalist Glenn Greenwald, a long-time critic of NSA warrantless spying operations and the global war on terror, spanning two US presidential administrations. Greenwald broke the story of ongoing US and UK mass surveillance programs in 2013 as a columnist for The Guardian with the assistance of Miranda and the Snowden emails.
The Snowden Treaty is aimed at the nations of the world and will require signatories to respect the privacy of citizens as outlined in Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Article 17 of the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights.
The Treaty concentrates on privacy, both at home and on the Internet. It seeks government protection of private activities conducted online. It also attempts to guarantee protection to whistleblowers like Edward Snowden himself.
PPI agreed to support the Treaty and appointed Peer to oversee the cooperation between the project and PPI.
We hope that all Pirate Parties support the effort and individual Pirates enter into the conversation by:
- following and retweeting from the @Snowdentreaty twitter account
- following and retweeting from the @Davidmirandario twitter account
- joining David Miranda’s Facebook Page
- reading and sharing the Treaty
