I joined the Pirate Party of Lower Saxony in Germany in April 2012, once I found out that non citizens were welcome to join and become active members of the Party. I joined the Pirate Times soon after it was started as a proof reader and am now an editor and author. Since then I have returned to my native New Zealand and joined the Pirate Party of New Zealand. Politically I come from the libertarian left and have, up to now, not regarded any political party as having a solution for the democratic deficit that envelops the world. With the advent of the Pirate Party, which truly embraces grass roots democracy, I have found a political home. The Pirate Times is a way I can contribute to furthering the Pirate Movement around the world.

Halle is situated near the old border between East and West Germany and this serves as an analogy for the divide that is unsettling the federal Party. In a previous article I analysed the crisis that led to half of the federal board resigning and the intention of the remaining members not to stand for reelection. The entire board must be replaced which can …

Jumping Ship: Pirates Cooperating with other Parties June 25, 2014 · by Andrew Reitemeyer · in Tips & Tricks In the recent EU elections we saw many Pirate Parties forming alliances with other parties in order to share resources and reach a larger demographic. Individual Pirates who have been working with and for other Parties and NGOs with and without sanction from their own Pirate Parties. How should we react to these activities? Alcohol is often used as a benchmark, as it is legal in most of the countries where Pirate Parties have been founded. Professor David Nutt produced a list of drugs in regular use in the United Kingdom and …

Iceland Election Results A Nail-Biting Finish June 3, 2014 · by Andrew Reitemeyer · in Election In an election result, reminiscent of last year’s national elections, the Pirate Party of Iceland saw a new representative enter the municipal council of Reykjavik by a narrow margin. The result is more important than one might think in Iceland, since the Pirates are very good at being representatives, using wasa2il and not just pushing a party line. They expected more seats but as Helgi told us in our last article about these elections: the Pirate demographic overlaps, to some extent, with the non-voter demographic.
